Cumbernauld Airport is conveniently located within easy reach of Scotland’s two largest cities, about 18 miles North East of Glasgow, and less than 40 miles from Edinburgh. For Scottish aviation fans, it’s a training base for fixed wing and rotary wing pilots.
And, in comparison to many of our other air bases here on FlyDays, it’s unique in that it is actually one of the newest. First ordered and built by the Cumbernauld Development Corporation, it was opened towards the end of the 1980s.
It took the existing grass runway strip that had been in existence there before they occupied the same site, as well as adding a 820m x 23m asphalt runway, as well as refuelling facilities and hangars that can accommodate King Air sized aircraft.
During its first few years of opening, Cumbernauld also hosted several air shows, most notably a display from the Red Arrows, and a staged ‘dogfight’ flight between a Supermarine Spitfire and a German Messerschmitt Bf 109 fighter plane.
Up and Away
