Information about Tiger Moth Aeroplanes

The iconic yellow Tiger Moth plane was born in the 1930s when it was designed by Geoffrey de Haviilard. In the beginning, it was primarily used by the Royal Air Force (RAF) to assist with the outbreak of World War Two for training British pilots. As the war went on, Tiger Moths evolved to have a multitude of functions including maritime surveillance, defensive anti invasion preparations and even as armed light bombers! During Operation Banquet in 1940, 350 Tiger Moths were fitted with bomb racks for coastal anti invasion preparations.

But for thousands of military pilots in WW2, stepping into a Tiger Moth was their first experience flying a plane - and they have remained as ideal trainer aircrafts ever since. By the outbreak of WW2 a total of 1,424 Tiger Moths had been completed for use domestically and abroad. Use extended into areas such as Greece, Peru and Switzerland.

Tiger Moths were a staple over the skies of Britain during one of the deadliest conflicts of the twentieth century, and took on a variety of uses. Throughout the years 1931-1944 a staggering 8,868 were made and used in Britain and overseas to aid the war efforts. They were favouried because of their simple design, control system and tandem configuration seats. In a way, it's no surprise that these are still incredibly popular training planes today.

Why Fly in a Tiger Moth?

Alongside the symbolic Spitfire, the Tiger Moth has earned a reputation for being one of the planes that helped Britain get through WW2. A flight in one isn't only a unique and wonderful experience, but a way to get close to history and gain an insight into what young pilots went through when they were taking a seat for the first time and learning to get to grips with the cockpit.

Aside from that, they are fairly easy to fly and built with big wings, making them very forgiving to learn in and ideal for beginners. The open cockpit provides you with the unique experience of feeling the force of the wind on your bare face as you soar through the air but is also a handy way of being able to move your head to the side during a runway approach.

Once you get handy with the controls, Tiger Moths are also capable of aerobatics and looping through the skies - which is always worth knowing if you are craving a more adrenaline filled flying experience!

With endless capabilities providing aviation enthusiasts with a glimpse into the past, Tiger Moths are unique planes to fly or enjoy a pleasure flight in and provide a memorable experience like no other.
