Information about Piper Cub Aeroplanes

Despite the US only entering World War 2 in 1941, the Piper Cub Aeroplane ended up playing a vital role in the conflict during preparations and beyond. In 1940, a young student pilot was flying a Piper Cub just as the Japanese launched their attack on Pearl Harbor, triggering their entry into the war. The plane inevitably crashed, killing the pilot in tow and this became the first US plane to be shot down during WW2.

Prior to entering the war, the Piper Cub was being manufactured on a huge scale to contribute to the Civilian Pilot Training Program (CPTP) coordinated by the government to help train new pilots, By the end of the war in 1945, 80% of all US military pilots had received their training in a Piper Cub, making it a vital trainer aircraft preparing young men for war.

Being simple to control and incredibly lightweight in the skies, it ended up being perfect for reconnaissance, liaison and ground control use in WW2 and was produced in large numbers - later being known as the L-4 Grasshopper. Just before the US joined the war, 3,016 had already been built.

It’s safe to say, the Piper Cub is well deserved of it’s spot among US aviation history, and is a fantastic plane to fly in if you ever get the chance!

Flying Experiences in Piper Cub Aeroplanes

Here at Flydays, we recognise the significance of this plane and the role it played in the US war effort, and so offer Pleasure Flights in a Piper Cub at selected locations in the UK. Alongside an expert pilot, you’ll take a seat in one of these fully restored iconic, bright yellow planes and will immediately be transported back to the 1940s as you hit the skies.

Although these flights are an opportunity for you to sit back, relax and appreciate the plane and the sense of history you gain just by siting in one of the seats, if you’re feeling brave, the pilot may ask you if you want to have a go with the controls. And who could pass up on the opportunity to have a go at steering a piece of history through the skies?

As you get to grips with the controls, your pilot will show you how to do climbing, descending and banked turns in this incredible plane as you enjoy a birds eye view of the landscape below. Not only is a pleasure flight in a Piper Cub a unique way to experience wartime history, but gives you a taster for flying if you opt to have a go with the controls yourself.

Why Fly in this Aeroplane?

If the bright yellow exterior and rich US aviation history doesn’t completely draw you in, here’s a reminder why the Piper Cub was chosen to be the number one aircraft for US pilots to train in prior to WW2.

It’s lightweight design mean it floats perfectly through the skies and it’s simplistic cockpit means anyone can get to grips with the basics of flying. Truly, there is no better way to experience a bit of US history than to take a trip up in a Piper Cub, but if you want to explore more options for vintage flying experiences, you’re certainly in the right place.

Similarly, we also offer Flying Lessons in a Piper PA28 Warrior Aeroplane, or the iconic British Tiger Moth! Each offers an individual flying feel steeped in history, it’s just up to you to decide which experience you want to start with! But it’s safe to say, whatever plane you choose will be giving you a unique glimpse into the past that you can’t get anywhere else.
