Information on the De Havilland Chipmunk

Breaking away from World War 2 predecessors such as the Spitfire and Tiger Moth planes, the de Havilland Chipmunk was produced in Canada in 1946 as a tandem 2-seater aircraft in the first post war aviation project by Havilland Canada.

After its first maiden flight in 1946, it went on to be widely used throughout the 1940s and 1950s by the Royal Canadian Air Force and Royal Air Force in the UK to train pilots in the skies by perfecting navigation and aerobatics.

Despite its versatility and capabilities for aerobatic manoeuvres it was gradually phased out of military and mainstream use in the 1950s, and fell into the hands of flight schools and those wanting to train the next generation of pilots. Nowadays, it’s a popular vintage aircraft for aviation enthusiasts and those seeking to explore a slice of history.
